September 18th Meeting

Good afternoon,  this is an early reminder that our next meeting of the AJAX GARDEN CLUB will be on Wednesday, September 18th in the Ajax Legion starting at 7:30.

The speaker for the evening will be Ingrid Janssen from Durham Master Gardeners on the topic of “Saving Seeds”.

The club is looking for new members so if you are interested in the topic, and not a current member, please join us and see what we are all about.   Membership is $20 a year but if you join between now and the end of 2024 your membership is good through 2025 too.

In addition to the speaker we will have our flower/plant show.  Below are the categories for the September meeting.

Division I – HORTICULTURAL
Section A – Specimens, Annuals & Perennials

1 Cone Flower [Echinacea/ Rudbeckia] – 1 stems or sprays, any cultivar.
2 Dahlia – 1 bloom, any cultivar.
3 Ornamental Grass – 2 stems of 1 cultivar
4 Sedum – 1 stem, any cultivar.
5 Vines – 1 stem or branch not to exceed 24″.
6 Zinnia – 1 stem, any cultivar over 4″.
7 Any other Annual (excluding the above named).
8 Any other Flowering Perennial. (Excluding the above named)

Section B – Shrubs
9 Butterfly Bush – 1 branch not to exceed 24″.
10 Rose of Sharon – 1 branch not to exceed 24″.
11 Any Other Shrub – 1 branch not to exceed 24″. (excluding the above named)

Section C – Fruits & Vegetables
12 Root vegetable – 2/3 specimens.
13 Tomato : large – 1 specimen, small – 3-5 specimens.
14 Any variety of fruit or berry.
15 Any other variety of vegetable.

Division II – DESIGN – THEME: “Country Living”
16 Pick & Plunk – plant material picked and plunked into a container of choice. Keep it simple.
17 Wine Time – design using a wine glass or bottle.

Division III – CULINARY
18 Chutney/Salsa/Pickles.
19 Jam/Jelly.

Division IV – PHOTOGRAPHY
20 The Birds and the Bees – include some form of wildlife.
21 The Chickens Come Home to Roost (Hens & Chicks).
22 Climbing up to Meet the Sky (vines and climbing plants).
23 Orange – the Colour of the Year.
